Amino Acids

Amino acids are organic compounds that have both an amino and a carboxyl radical in their structures.

Amino acids are necessary to virtually every physiological process within our bodies. In the case of bodybuilders, amino acids are essential to muscle growth and repair. energy production, hormone production, endocrine gland activity, and nervous system function (including memory and other brain activity).

Amino acids can combine with vitamins and minerals to produce effects in your body. They can also serve as the raw materials from which your body manufactures enzymes, hormones, etc. They can be catalysts for enzyme reactions, and they can make up the enzymes themselves.

You need amino acids present in your body for a number of physical process. You need them present, but also in the proper proportions for these physical processes to be carried out.

Major Sources of Amino Acids

Amino acids are divided into two groups, both essential and nonessential amino acids. Don't be misled by this division, since all amino acids are necessary for metabolism, growth and other physical processes taking place within our bodies. The nonessential amino acids are manufactured by your body. Your body does not manufacture the essential ones, however (with some exceptions). If your body does manufacture them, they are manufactured in very low amounts. You must provide your body with these essential amino acids through your diet.

ESSENTIAL Amino Acids

Amino acids that your body can't make on its own, or does so in insufficient amounts, are deemed essential. Eight of these amino acids must be consumed through your diet.

CONDITIONALLY ESSENTIAL Amino Acids

As the name implies, some amino acids may be either essential or not, depending on the circumstances. For example, if the supply of essential aminos in your diet is limited, other aminos can become essential.

NON-ESSENTIAL Amino Acids

Your body has the ability to synthesize these amino acids from other amino acids, fat or carbohydrate. They are, therefore, deemed nonessential because you don't have to worry about consuming protein-rich foods high in these aminos.
