Bob began by introducing the DVD and the contents. He started off with standing cambered (EZ) curl bars, and demonstrated proper form, before doing another set using straps. I don't use straps for much except for deadlifts on some occasions, but they are definitely advantageous for grip. I wouldn't see a need to use straps for curls, but I don't think they could hurt either.
Bob recommended the EZ curl bar to prevent elbow problems. Bob has long been an advocate of injury prevention, even if it means avoiding core lifts. Bob had an article in FLEX magazine explaining why the basics were basically wrong, and explained how they can lead to injury and offer little benefit over and above regular exercises.
Bob moved on to performing standing alernate curls with dumbbells which is one of my favourite biceps building exercises. He explained the importance of having balanced biceps and forearms and performed the exercise with perfect technique.
Preacher curls were up next, and Bob used the cambered (EZ) curl bar again for this exercise.
Bob performed preacher curls again, this time doing one arm at each time using dumbbells and explained techniques.
After that, he moved on to concentration curls which is another good biceps exercise to include in your workout regiment. For complete demonstrations of various biceps exercise, check out the database below:
Bob moved on to triceps next, and began with triceps pushdowns using the cambered bar and a close grip. Once again, he went over injury prevention and said that the cambered bar will help to prevent injury compared to the straight bar.
Bob did one arm pushdowns using the handle to hit each arm individually. Bob turned the handle around and did the exercise in reverse format which I think would be slightly less effective for triceps and if I'm not mistaken, I read an article in Muscle & Fitness which explained that this reverse grip one arm triceps pushdown was more of a polishing exercise and was either written by Ronnie Coleman or at least had his photo in the article performing it. I read that article at least five years ago, but when thing I definitely do remember is that the exercise was listed as more of a polishing exercise than a mass builder when using the reverse grip.
Bob performed close grip presses next using the cambered (EZ) bar. As a tip, he said to make sure the grip is close, but not too close.
Bob then showed the difference between skullcrushers and French curls. He used the cambered (EZ) bar once again to perform both of these exercises and explained their subtle differences verbally as well as his demonstration.
Bob performed seated overhead presses (extensions) next and followed that up with the single arm version doing one hand overhead triceps presses.
Next up was the triceps kickbacks exercise and Bob showed the traditional method and the variation he uses which is a little different. Bob then did rope triceps pushdowns next.
Bob started demonstrating the poses which are asked of competitive bodybuilders during the symmetry round. As he went through each pose he explained every pose in detail and I would have to say this section would be a very good aid for those who have an upcoming competition. Much like the rest of this DVD and the entire DVD series is very helpful in its instructional nature.
Although Bob was not quite in contest condition during the filming of this DVD series, he was pretty close to it, as he had just won the 2006 Masters World Championships. During his contest preparation he filmed his "War of the World" DVD. That DVD shows Bob as he goes from being in off-season shape to being in contest shape. He subsequently won this show, and this DVD series was filmed just after, so given the proximity of the filming of this DVD, he is quite shredded in it, and just a slight bit off from contest shape.
For competitive bodybuilders, I would recommend reviewing the posing section of this DVD more than any other segment, since Bob goes over some very solid information which is seldom seen elsewhere. The information on this DVD is nice and organized and having a copy of it on hand would make it very easy to access for competitors. Bodybuilding.com gives one disc of this DVD set to anyone ordering over $99 in supplements, and I would recommend definitely doing that, as it is a worthwhile DVD to have. I think the concept of the free DVD gift is a great one which has no doubt worked very well for bodybuilding.com as they are looking at 124 million in sales this year!
Bob hit a slew of poses including numerous back poses to demonstrate his strength in this area.
Bob listed the following tips:
1. Start from the ground up (flexing from the legs)
2. Keep control of the mid-section
3. Relax and take your time.
5. Look professional at all times (regardless of the contest, or your contest experience).
This was another excellent DVD in Bob's DVD series for bodybuilding.com. The DVDs come free in all orders over $99 and that is why I highly recommend ordering them. If you are already placing an order for supplements, why not take the free gift that goes along with it? There are a choice of gifts, but this is definitely my recommendation as the first choice, starting with Disc-1 and eventually acquiring the whole set if you buy more gifts. The discs can also be purchased for $9.99 each or $24.99 for the entire set. For those who are seeking an instructional DVD set of high quality, I cannot think of one better than this one and I have reviewed dozens of bodybuilding DVDs. Disc-3 is particularly useful for those competitor bodybuilders seeking posing advice and tips. Overall this is a great series and is useful for any collection, whether owned by a beginner or advanced bodybuilder. Highly recommended - A+.
