Chris Cormier

Chris Cormier trained his delts and arms nine days before the 2004 Mr. Olympia Contest with the following routine:

  • Side Lateral Raises - 32, 40 pounds.
  • Front Raises - 30, 40, 40.
  • Pec Deck Flyes for Rear Delts (three sets).
  • Machine Shrugs (two sets).
  • Upright Rows - 95, 145, 145.
Chris follows up his shoulders routine with some posing in his tank top - his conditioning looks to be on point for the Olympia at this time, and his fullness is great.

  • Triceps Pulldowns (two sets).
  • Alternate Curls - 32, 50, 80.
  • Machine Preacher Curls (two sets).
  • Reverse Seated Triceps Pulldowns (one set).
  • Close Grip Bench Press with 135, 185, 225.

After hitting his arms, what impressed me the most was Chris' strength for biceps curls - using the 80s for alternate dumbbell curls so close to contest time. Although it would seem as though most pros could do that, on training videos, often, pros aren't going up that high, especially towards a contest. Chris has a rep for being very strong and it shows in his workouts with his poundages.

  • Crunch Machine (three sets).
  • Rope Crunches (two sets).

Chris poses his abs after doing his crunches then heads home. Chris is obviously a fan of rap, as that is what he listens to when he drives.

Chris has some conversations on the phone. Chris speaks with someone and talks about how he is a bit upset with Victor Martinez who made some comments about Chris in a recent issue or Muscular Development. Chris stated that he thinks it's ok if those bodybuilders who are on his level talk smack, but if you're not on his level, don't do it. Be on his level first - he gave Markus Ruhl as an example, who had consistently done well in previous contests they mutually competed in.

There's not too much to say about this scene. The reason it was included in the DVD was to give people a glimpse into Chris' life outside of bodybuilding alone, and it succeeds at that task.

Legs

Chris hits legs seven days out from the Olympia.

  • Leg Press (four sets).
  • Hack Squats (three sets).
  • Non Smith Machine Squats (three sets).
  • Leg Extensions (two sets).
  • Seated Calve Raises (three sets).
  • Machine Calve Raises (three sets).

Like so many other pros, Chris' leg workout leading up to the show was lacking in poundage. Chris is known as one of the most powerful bodybuilders in the IFBB, having the strength required to do 1,000 hack squats. That much weight wasn't shown for the training here, since he was so close to contest shape.

Chiropractor

Like so many other pros, Chris visits the chiropractor regularly. In recent years, it seems that every pro shows footage of the visit to give a glimpse into their daily activities. Bodybuilding is not just about training hard, but also about so many other factors - Nutrition, supplementation, and yes, taking care of your body with visits to the chiropractor or massage therapist as well.

Back

Chris hits his back five days out from the Mr. Olympia. As some of you who follow bodybuilding will know, Chris' back is one of the biggest and best in bodybuilding. His back detail is excellent, and he looks great in all back poses. Obviously his genetics for muscularity, and his training are up to snuff when it coms to back.

  • Machine Rows (two sets).
  • Dumbbell Rows (three sets).
  • Two Arm Incline Rows (two sets).
  • Front Pulldowns (one set).
  • Hyperextensions (three sets).

I liked Chris' back workout, whether he strictly uses it pre-contest or not, I think it's great. He has a variety of exercises in it to cover all areas of the back and it's no wonder in my mind that his back is his strong point.

Chest

Another of Chris' standout parts in my mind is his chest - big, round and full. It has a great shape genetically, and he has done a lot to get it into the kind of size and conditioning required to do well competitively. He is also particularly good at posing his chest properly, which is an asset.

  • Non Smith Machine Press (three sets).
  • Machine Flat Flyes (three sets).

IFBB star Tommi Thorvildsen shows up after Chris finishes with the bench presses. After his second set is complete, Chris hits some posing - doing a most muscular, side chest and side triceps, and after the fourth set, he does some more posing.

Afterwards, Chris finishes off with some posing and he looks fantastic. He did well at the Mr. Olympia and still has a future ahead of him. 2004 was a great year for Chris, and the best could very well be yet to come. The photo below will give you an idea of the size and condition Chris was supporting around the time the video was shot (one week before the 2004 Mr. Olympia). OVERALL REVIEW!

Overall, I quite enjoyed this DVD and I'm very happy to have it as part of my growing collection of bodybuilding videos & DVDs. I consider this somewhere in the middle in terms of overall quality. The information was great and the editing was also well done. Overall, it was well produced with the exception that the video quality and sound could stand to be improved upon. Mitsuru Okabe has shot many videos including Ronnie Coleman in the Cost of Redemption, and the quality of video is excellent. Just about as good as you can get with a video camera. However, the same can't be said for this DVD. It's not the worst, but not the best either (in terms of quality of video alone). However, if your main interest in purchasing bodybuilding DVDs is to get insight into the training programs of the pros, this DVD is one to buy. You won't regret if it that's the case, and for those who are fans of Chris Cormier, this DVD is a must!
