REVIEW OF CLIF CLIF BARS
Clif Clif Bar
I have been in the process of reviewing as many protein and energy bars as possible over the last few weeks and I do not intend to stop doing so anytime soon. As I review more and more bars, I have a greater basis for judgment and each successive review I create is more informative because I have a wide range of comparative products to compare the current bar to.
Here are the product highlights for the Clif Clif bars:
- More of the good stuff! Clif bars are packed with more juicy apricots, sweet chocolate chips, and larger chunks of almonds and peanuts.
- More Nutrition! Each bar now has 23 vitamins and minerals for overall wellness, 5 grams of our proprietary fiber blend and 8-12 grams of soy protein for enhanced muscle recovery.
- More Energy! According to a recent university study, the blend of carbohydrates, protein and fiber in Clif Bars causes a steady increase and then a gradual decline in blood sugar level to avoid the sugar high and crash often associated with refined ingredients and sweeteners, creating nutrition for sustained energy.
- All-Natural Ingredients! Clif Bar Inc. believes in using only the highest quality, all-natural ingredients. In keeping with this tradition, we use only non-GMO soy protein, meaning that none of the soy used in Clif Bar products has been genetically modified.
- Our Latest Flavor! Chocolate Brownie brings you back to Mom's kitchen with the decadent flavor of freshly baked brownies.
The Clif bars have a wide range of ingredients and vitamins & minerals in every bar.
I will now go over each point in the bullet list above and expand on it a little further, giving my thoughts on each one:
'More of the good stuff! Clif bars are packed with more juicy apricots, sweet chocolate chips, and larger chunks of almonds and peanuts.'
I did not sample the 'Apricot', 'Black Cherry Almond', or 'Chocolate Almond Fudge' flavours of the Clif bars, but I did sample both the 'Chocolate Chip' and 'Crunchy PB' flavours. I can agree that the chunks of peanuts were definitely present in the chunky peanut butter flavour, and that is a positive attribute of the bar. Of course, I recommend those with peanut allergies be conscious of the peanuts and other ingredients which may cause allergic reactions. For everyone else, the crunchy peanut butter flavour comes highly recommended on my behalf.
'More Nutrition! Each bar now has 23 vitamins and minerals for overall wellness, 5 grams of our proprietary fiber blend and 8-12 grams of soy protein for enhanced muscle recovery.'
I can think of nothing to say about this claim. Clif bars do indeed have 23 vitamins and minerals which certainly boost a person's wellness and overall felign of health, and five grams of fiber aids in the digestive process within the human body. 8-12 grams of soy protein is a good thing for those who enjoy soy protein sources, although those with soy allergies must of course be conscious of label claims on Clif products and all other food and supplement products. All in all, this is definitely a bar with a healthy blend of vitamins and other healthy items.
'More Energy! According to a recent university study, the blend of carbohydrates, protein and fiber in Clif Bars causes a steady increase and then a gradual decline in blood sugar level to avoid the sugar high and crash often associated with refined ingredients and sweeteners, creating nutrition for sustained energy.'
The aforementioned comment makes sense to me. In order to avoid a sugar high, a slow release of sugars into the blood and systems of the body would seem to be logical. Having said that, I refuse to use educated guesses or 'common sense' when evaluating such a statement as I simply demand seeing the hard science behind every such claim. In this case, a study is discussed, but not cited. I demand that every company and every product making such claims show their evidence. For example, Gaspari Nutrition consistently references the studies which prove their claims, while MuscleTech never does this. It is extremely important to be able to prove something to be true and not just take the word of a company or person. If you demand a high burden of proof in everything in life, you can guarantee better results in everything you do, and that I can personally guarantee. This claim is a bold one, and for every such claim, I demand to see the peer reviewed scientificstudy which proves it.
'All-Natural Ingredients! Clif Bar Inc. believes in using only the highest quality, all-natural ingredients. In keeping with this tradition, we use only non-GMO soy protein, meaning that none of the soy used in Clif Bar products has been genetically modified.'
It is wonderful that Clif bars do not contain genetically modified soy protein, for those who care about this type of thing. Personally I think the entire concept of non-GM and organic foods is to create a niche market of health enthusiasts who can't even prove beyond a reasonable doubt that it is even dangerous to consume products which do not fall into that category to begin with. To me, it is a cultural niche much like global warming, where those who believe it can't provide substancial evidence to a host of their claims in the first place. In other words, 'non-GM' and 'organic' are not important for ME, but they may full well be important for YOU, and I can respect that. If that is the case, you may want to try out the Clif bars. Another bar I would recommend for those who are seeking health foods with those qualities would be
Clif Clif Bar.
'Our Latest Flavor! Chocolate Brownie brings you back to Mom's kitchen with the decadent flavor of freshly baked brownies.'
Based on the overall quality of the two Clif flavours I tried (Chocolate Chip and Crunchy PB), I would assume that this claim is very much true since I have no reason to doubt the quality of the Clif bars.
I am a HUGE fan of the Clif bars. The crunchy peanut butter flavour was basically perfect in my opinion, and I did enjoy the chocolate chip flavour, although I found that it had just the slightest hint of being a health food item. The problem with so many health supplements is that they have this distinct taste, and Clif bars are among the best so far that I have tried which is not as noticeable in this area. When I ate the crunchy PB bar, I was pretty hungry and amazingly, it basically filled me up. Granted, I have a very tiny appetite, but I was very pleased that a 250 calorie bar was able to do that. The bars did not feel as heavy as other protein bars I tried, and that is likely due in part to the quality and type of protein that is present. For bars which contain 20 grams of protein, I can generally always feel the weight of the bar in my stomach after eating it (much like a steak). Of the two flavours that I tried, I would recommend the crunchy peanut butter flavour over the chocolate chip flavour, but I did enjoy them both.
In terms of nutritional value, and taste/texture I definitely recommend the Clif bars. Other considerations would be price and protein content. You can purchase 12 bars for $12.99 which is a very low price for protein bars which works out to $1.08 per bar. Although I only tried 2/13 flavours, based on the quality of the two that I tried, I would imagine any flavour would be worthwhile, and I plan to try the other flavours in the future to confirm that thought. Another major consideration for those purchasing these bars would likely protein content, and each bar contains 12 grams of protein which is a little on the low side for me. I prefer bars which contain 20 grams of protein, but that does make the bars a little heavier to eat due to more protein and overall calories. All in all, based on a number of considerations, I can still rate these bars an A. I encourage everyone to do as much research as possible when it comes to protein/energy bars and any other supplement or food item you choose to consume, since it is very important to be aware of what you are including in your diet. Clif bars are definitely in the upper tier of protein bars that I have tried, based on a number of considerations, and I will surely try them again. A.
