Dorian Yates Approved Pro-M.R. Review by Matt Canning
Dorian Yates is a true legend in the history of bodybuilding. To many, Dorian is the most competitive bodybuilder ever and in either his 1993 or 1995 Mr. Olympia forms, those same people would say that he demonstrated the single greatest performance by a bodybuilder ever. He received criticism for having a wide waist and for obtaining injuries later in his career, but his combination of epic size with monster hardness is something which has remained among the best ever in the history of bodybuilding.
It would only make sense that Dorian applied his hard work and skill to the business world as well. When Dorian Yates came out with the company "Dorian Yates Approved" people expected a high standard. At the 2007 Mr. Olympia contest, I received sample packs of Dorian's meal replacement product "Pro-M.R" and decided to sample it and see if it passes the test.
I tried the "chocolate malt" flavour and when I initially read the nutritional information I was suprised with the overall calorie and fat content until I realized that it was not a regular protein powder, but a meal replacement formula. Upon further examination, I felt that as far as meal replacement powders go, it was actually quite nutritionally sound! Each serving size is one 72 gram packet and contains 270 calories in total, only 25 calorie of which (three grams) are from fat. The cholesterol is 35 mg and the sodium is 380 mg, with a whopping 42 grams of protein. Each serving also contains 19 grams of carbohydrates which is not too high as far as MRPs are concerned. Dorian's product also contains a wide variety of vitamins and unfortunately, artifical flavours as well. I don't see why so many supplement companies put artificial flavours in their products but I suppose at the end of the day, it all comes down to the bottom line, which is the mighty dollar and people are more prone to buy supplements which taste good as opposed to bland tasting supplements. In the spirit of health and fitness, I would much prefer to consume bland tasting supplements with the added benefit of knowing it is from a more healthful blend. In any event, I'm sure you will find as I did, that most MRPs and related supplements do have artificial flavours.
I thought that the Dorian Yates Approved Pro-M.R. tasted great! It was very thick and if I had to describe it, I would say it tasted like hot chocolate which had been sitting around for a while and cooled off. So basically, cold hot chocolate (if that makes any sense). It had that thick cocoa taste. While a lot of protein powders taste like chocolate milk, I would say the chocolate malt flavour of this MRP tasted more like cocoa. It was very enjoyable and also very filling!
Mixed in 2% milk, I found the consistency to be quite thick although I could have mixed it in more milk to prevent this. Stirred with a spoon, it did clump up, but the clumps were not clumps of powder, but just thicker parts of the shake so it was not as if I was eating dry powder while also drinking my shake (a problem which happens and MRP blends clump up). Overall, it mixed quite we ll.
No problems here! It went down easy and I really enjoyed drinking it. I prefer whole foods over supplements any day, but this one was easy to drink and to digest.
Usually I use protein powders and not MRPs, but this was an MRP which was quite nutritionally sound and sufficient in calories. As far as meal replacement powders go - I like it. Although I don't like the artificial flavouring it contains, I like almost everything else about it. 20 packets cost $37.94 and I usually use half a packet per serving which works out to about $1 each!
