DISC 1

The DVD starts off with a pretty cool intro, showing a collage of Jay Cutler scenes, which emphasizes his competitive physique in general, and his condition in particular. I've never seen Jay this shredded before, save for his performance in the 2001 Mr. Olympia Contest. I often see Jay as being cut but soft (soft being relative) - in that he lacks the density and muscle maturity of some bodybuilders, like Ronnie Coleman - of course Jay is still young and it took Ronnie 41 years of his life and 28 years of training to get the quality muscle he has - Jay has the mass and the cuts, but displays less hardness than Ronnie. But in the opening sequences of this DVD, you may be quite surprised at just how hard and dense Jay's muscle appears to be - it was definitely a unique look for Jay, and one we will probably see in the future.

Legs

Jay trains his legs at the following gym:

Gold's Gym
East Las Vegas
1-702-451-4222
3750 East Flamingo Road, LV, NV89121

The DVD details Jay's training leading up to the 2004 Arnold Schwarzenegger Contest which Jay won. He trained on Monday, February 16, 2004, less than three weeks out of the Arnold Classic.

Jay started by getting his blood moving with a warmup on a cardio bike, then at 2:30PM, hit the following routine:

  • Smith Machine Squats - 135 (warmup), 225 lbs X 9, 315X9, 365X8, 315X3, (dropset), 225X4.
  • Leg Press - 5 plates, 7, 8X9 reps.
  • Front Squats - 225, 315X6, 225X4.
  • Lunges - 95 lbs for two sets.
  • Leg Extensions (four sets).

After the quads portion of his workout was complete, Jay mentioned that his weight was 285 pounds and would be around 265 pounds by the time of the contest. He then went on to hit his hamstrings workout, which looked like this:

  • Lying Hamstring Curls (four sets).
  • Seated Hamstrings Curl (two sets).
  • Stiff Legged Dumbbell Deadlifts (two sets).
  • Standing Single Leg Hamstrings Curls (two sets).
  • Hip Adductor (three sets).

After Jay finished up his two sets of stiff legged dumbbell deadlifts, he does some poses and is looking great and on par to perform well at the Classic. He also did some leg posing after his second set of the hip adductors.

At 3:31 PM, Jay went to weigh himself, and weighed in at 270 pounds. Did he lose 15 pounds so quickly? Seems like he was mistaken about the 285 he had earlier claimed.

After that, Jay went to do some ab work, doing the following workout:

  • Crunches (three sets).
  • Side Crunches (two sets).
  • Leg Ups (three sets).

Jay did some posing after his second set of leg ups, including the following poses:

  • Front Pose.
  • Side Pose.
  • Most Muscular.
  • Back Pose.

Jay shows his shredded thighs after the third set, and Cutler chats a bit. Jay Cutler is easily one of the best spokesmen for bodybuilding - he has plenty of important things to say about bodybuilding and I think he does well representing it.

Afterwards, Jay finishes up with some stretching.

Nighttime Cardio

Tuesday, February 17, 2004

Jay does some cardio at the following gym:

Gold's Gym
NW LV
1-702-360-8205
7501 West Lake Mead, LV, NV89128

I think it's nuts that Jay wakes up in the middle of the night right from a dead sleep by an alarm clock to do cardio! Talk about dedicated. But he does it, and obviously his conditioning is evidence of his dedication and drive. Jay hits the treadmill, the ski machine, and the bike. The amount of work Jay puts into his career is sickening. I know bodybuilding videos & DVDs don't show it all, but based on all the videos I've seen, Jay has been the most focussed that I've seen - this guy means business! He quite reminds me of Dorian Yates in terms of his mentality.

During the time Jay spends performing cardio, he predicts a third consecutive win at the 2004 Arnold Schwarzenegger Classic (a prediction which later came true). Then at 2:46 AM, Jay heads to get a tan:

Rio-Tan
Open 24/7
1-702-869-2070

Tanning is part of the pre-contest schedule of many bodybuilders, although these days, the option of pro-tan coating is available which prevents the need for actual booth tanning.

At 9:03 AM, Jay performs cardio at his home on the treadmill. Jay is quite an entrepreneur and his business sense shows in many aspects of the DVD. Jay then introduces his pets, two dogs; Trace, an Airdale terrier, and Scraps, a cocker-poo.

Jay then has a meal and tells us a little bit about his diet. He says he drinks three gallons of tang each day (over 10 liters!) and has no simple sugars in his diet - just cell-tech:

In this diet, he has no coca cola and no rice cakes, which he had included in other diets as cheat items, but this diet was very specific and did not allow them. Just like Ronnie Coleman in the Cost of Redemption, Jay Cutler was taking a whole pharmacy full of vitamins. Here is what he supplements with:

Jay says these vitamins and other supplements keep his immune system up and help with recovery.

Jay says that he is on 3,500-4,000 calories a day for his diet. He woke up at 265 pounds - then had breakfast which consisted of oatmeal with cinnamon in the morning. He said his body was "like a freight train right now." Cutler also eats a lot of asparagus during his diet, and he cited his reason being because it is a good diuretic.

Calves / Chest

Jay did his calves and chest workout at the following gym:

Jay started his workout at 11:37 AM with cardio. He followed it up with a calves workout:

  • Standing Calf Raises (five sets).
  • Seated Calf Raises (2 plates, 3 plates, then 160 pounds, and one last set with 3 plates).

After his calves workout, Jay his chest with the following workout at 12:01 PM:

  • Machine Flyes (three sets).
  • Flat Dumbbell Press (warmup, 120 pound dumbbells for 8 reps, and one additional set).
  • Incline Smith Machine Press (225 lbs, 315X6, 315, 315, 225 dropsets).
  • Cable Flyes (three sets).
  • Pushups.

After his Smith machine incline presses, Jay did some posing in his tank top. Before he did his pushups, he mentioned that he changed his training over the years and now follows the instinctive principle.

At 12:26 PM he concludes his workout and poses in the bathroom - Jay looks amazing - cut and full!

At 1:12 PM Jay had lunch - a cup of brown rice, a 12 ounce round steak and sugar free tang.

FitExpo

The Fit Expo took place in the Pasadena Civic Center in California on Saturday, February 21. Jay was filmed shortly after noon and seen meeting with fans. NPC president and IFBB pro division head judge Jim Manion showed up to chat briefly with Jay as well as Stephan A. Metz of Staging Lane Productions, Inc.

Jay ate some turkey and brown rice for lunch - 12 ounces of turkey and one cup of rice, to keep calories up during the expo.

Delts & Arms

For his shoulders and arms routine, Jay is back at East Las Vegas Gold's:

Gold's Gym
East Las Vegas
1-702-451-4222
3750 East Flamingo Road, LV, NV89121

He trained on Tuesday, February 26 at 2 PM approximately ~~ one week out from the 2004 Arnold Classic. He started on the cardio bike, and then performed his workout:

  • Side Lateral Raises (four sets).
  • Seated Dumbbell Press - warmup, 115 pound dumbbells X 6 reps, 120X8.
  • Single Arm Cable Lateral Raises (one set).
  • Butterfly Pec Deck for Rear Delts (three sets).
  • Machine Lateral Raises (one set).
  • Triceps Pulldowns with Rope (five sets).
  • Triceps Pulldowns with long V-bar (two sets).
  • Seated Dumbbell Pullovers (three sets).

Jay Cutler Dumbbell Pullovers

He then took off his shirt and hit some poses - he did the following poses:

  • Front Pose.
  • Side Pose.
  • Front Double Biceps.
  • Front Lat Spread.
  • Quads Pose.
  • Most Muscular.
  • Side Pose.
  • Rear Lat Spread.
  • Rear Double Biceps.
  • Hamstrings Pose.
  • Abs Pose.
  • Most Muscular Pose.
  • Relaxed Pose.

His delts in particular - were shredded. He did two additional sets of seated pushdowns for his triceps with no shirt on, and then hit an abs and quads pose. After his posing was complete, he moved on to his biceps workout:

  • Seated Alternate Dumbbell Curls (two sets).
  • Machine Curls (four sets).
  • Standing Alternate Dumbbell Curls (four sets).

Jay then did some abs:

  • Crunches (one set on bench).
  • Crunches (two sets with no shirt, on floor).
  • Kickups on bench (three sets).
  • Side Crunches (two sets).

He did some posing after one of his sets of crunches and was looking great.

After his crunch workout was complete, he did some posing in the locker room in his posing trunks. He hit the following poses:

  • Front Pose.
  • Side Pose.
  • Back Pose.
  • Front Double Biceps.
  • Front Lat Spread.
  • Side Chest.
  • Side Triceps.
  • Rear Lat Spread.
  • Rear Double Biceps.
  • Abs & Thigh.
  • Side Serratus.
  • Right Biceps Pose.
  • Hands Clasped Most Muscular Pose.
  • Most Muscular Variation.
  • Various other poses including a most muscular.

I found it funny that as the camera panned out, we can see there was another person just sitting on the bench, as Cutler went through his poses.

Massage

On Thursday, February 26 at 4:27 PM, we are back at Cutler's house, where he is cooking up a fish on his "Fish Only - Outside Use" George Foreman's Grill. Jay's wife, Kerry Cutler, comes home from school and their Airdale terrier trace meets her. A half hour later, Jay's massage therapist, Von Jackson arrives:

Von Jackson
Massage Therapist
Palms Spa
1-702-942-6937

Von said that he was warned beforehand that Jay was a huge bodybuilder, but that he was ready for the task and that he would not need any additional tools beyond his own body weight to perform the massages on Cutler. Once he started giving Jay massages, however, Von quickly realized that his own body weight was not enough to perform the work Jay needed, and he did opt to get that tool. Von said that massages can help bodybuilders in a number of ways, for example - Jay's lat span improved after he had started receving massages. Naturally much of this improvement would have been due to Jay's training, nutrition, and supplement regiment, but the massages help as well.

Back

Later, Jay goes back to East Gold's gym, where he drinks a Nitro Tech Shake. He then hits the cardio bike for a session of cardio - his reported body weight is 270 pounds. He then gets right into his back workout:

  • Long Bar Lat Pulldowns (four sets).
  • Machine Single Arm Rows with straps (four reps with up to 205 each side).
  • Incline Dumbbell Rows (three sets).
  • Triangle Bar Lat Pulldowns (two sets).
  • T-Bar Rows (three sets).
  • Dumbbell Shrugs (five reps).
  • Deadlifts - 225 pounds, 315X2 sets.
  • Cable Rows (three sets).

Jay then hit a seated front lat spread after set #1 of the cable rows, followed by the following poses which he performed in posing trunks:

Jay Cutler Rear Lat Spread

  • Front Relaxed.
  • Hands Clasped Most Muscular Pose.
  • Side Relaxed.
  • Rear Relaxed.
  • Rear Double Biceps.

Jay Cutler Rear Double Biceps

Afterwards, his wife Kerry helps Jay to stretch.

Guest Appearance

On Saturday, March 6, 2004 in Columbus, Jay won the 2004 Arnold Schwarzenegger Classic as well as the Most Muscular award.

On Saturday, March 20, 2004, two weeks after the Arnold Classic Jay put on 35 pounds and was still in shredded condition. He did a guest posing at the Jon Lindsay's NPC World Gym Classic in San Diego. Barbara Garcia, 2004 NPC O.C Heavyweight and Overall Champ was there too. Jay pumps up and is looking lean - definitely well under 10% body fat.

Before going out to pose Jay briefly chats with Kent Kuehn, 1975 IFBB Mr. North America Medium / Overall Winner. Then Mike Stolle announces Cutler's guest pose to the crowd, stating Jay's body weight at around 280 pounds (give or take a few pounds), and Jay showed up to pose, looking incredible at that weight.

OVERALL REVIEW!

Of all the bodybuilding videos and DVDs that I've currently seen, this was definitely among my favourites, and there are many reasons for that - first off all, it's a long DVD, 3.5 hours in total between the two discs, and high quality the whole time. On top of that, Jay filmed the DVD at a time when his conditioning was first rate and among his lifetime best, which made it especially impressive. This was also the first DVD I had seen of Jay Cutler, and I was extremely impressed with both his work ethic and his ability as a speaker and representative of bodybuilding - no doubt he would make a great Mr. Olympia. Jay is massive and cut as well as being extremely strong - obviously he's no Ronnie Coleman in terms of strength, but he is excellent nevertheless, especially since this DVD was filmed when Jay was on a diet and in a depleted state.

Overall, the DVD was very enjoyable and a great addition to the collection.
