Nasser El Sonbaty was one of the greatest bodybuilders to ever set foot on stage, and considered by many to be an uncrowned Mr. Olympia.

These days, a popular topic on many bodybuilding message boards is that Nasser is washed up and should retire. My take on this is pretty simple: Nasser was one of the greatest ever. He was one of the very few bodybuilders able to instill fear in the hearts of Dorian Yates. In fact, when Dorian won the 1997 Mr. Olympia contest, people felt the Sandow should have been split in two, with the back half going to Dorian, and the front half going to Nasser. Some others even felt that Nasser should have taken the whole show. Nasser had it all - great chest, huge full biceps and triceps, and he was world famous in bodybuilding for his quad development. On top of this, he came in contests at around 280 pounds at a height of 5'11 ripped to the bone. He had great genetics - a trim waist and huge, full muscle bellies. Great symmetry and always had great abs for a man carrying as much mass as he was. His back was a relative weak point, and in the opinion of many, he would have been the Mr. Olympia at least once if he had the same level of development on his back as Dorian Yates. However, at his competitive best, Nasser's back didn't stop him from taking home the big titles on many occassions. Here is a list of contests Nasser won:

It is very unfortunate to see such a great iron warrior fall down the ranks so far. People used to remember Nasser as one of the few able to give Dorian Yates a run for his money, but if he continues to place so poorly in contests, the bodybuilding community will forget some of his more notable achievements. Nasser is very young - only 39 years old. Many bodybuilders in the past have been able to peak continually with age - as it is just a number. If Nasser could get back into the shape that used to place him near the top in just about any bodybuilding contest, then he should carry on. If that is not possible, I think he should consider moving on, for the following reasons:
- Financial
There is little to no money in bodybuilding as it is. With the placings Nasser has received lately, he has not placed in the money. However, contest prep, food costs, supplement costs, and other costs, continuing to compete in bodybuilding is a financial burden.
- Health
Bodybuilding is a physically demanding sport. It requires an enormous amount of dedication to be successful as a pro and can wear on the body.
- Leaving a Champion
As long as Nasser continues to fall down the ranks, the better off he will be retiring soon. If he can improve and get back to his best condition, then it will be great to see him compete, if not, it's always better to leave a winner. Only Nasser knows for sure.
- Back up Plan
What many of you may not know is that Nasser is a highly educated man, with Master's degrees in History, Political Science and Sociology. With such a great deal of education, Nasser would have no problem at all finding employment - employment which would pay him more (or any money at all!), and employment which wouldn't be so physically taxing.
Nasser does not have to stop bodybuilding altogether, nor should he. But he should consider all factors and make the best decision. As a big fan, we all want to see him come back on top.
