NOW Sports Soy Protein Isolate - Review by Michael S

NOW Sports Soy Protein Isolate

Soy beans, soy milk, soy crisps...etc. There are hundreds of soy products out there and I have tried quite a few. Personally I do not like the taste, texture or even smell of any soy product. The appeal of soy as a protein supplement is that it is naturally low in bad cholesterols and fats also it's a plant, which a lot of people fine appealing. NOW Sports Soy Protein isolate was no exception for me. The fact that it was unflavoured didn't help either, also being "Non Genetically Engineered" was not a big bonus for me, seeing as not many things I eat are.

I'm not going to lie this was the first Soy Protein Isolate product I have ever tried and was fairly excited after reading the nutrition label and seeing 20grams of protein for a 24 gram serving with only 90 calories. It seemed like a miracle until I opened the lid. After an intense chest workout with a new 1 rep max reached at my now lower body weight I was hoping this might be the answer to maintaining that weight with such a low calorie intake per serving with an 83 percent protein content.

After hastily opening the plastic wrap and tamper proof features the first thing to hit me was the awful smell of soy that I'm sure a lot of us have experienced over the years with our vegetarian friends who have grown accustomed to the taste and smell. My first attempt with the powder was mixing 1 serving in 500ml of water with just a spoon, this was a complete failure. The product immediately started sticking to the sides of my glass, clumping and I could not even swallow the product thanks to its awful taste and paste like texture. I figured there was no use putting it into a blender so I quickly disposed of it. The second thing I try is mixing with orange juice seeing as it is usually the perfect delivery system for protein powders with it's simple carbohydrates that are digested quickly to replenish glycogen after a workout and it's amazing ability to mask the terrible flavour of almost anything. Once again I was proven wrong. I mixed another 24 gram serving with 500ml of orange juice in a blender. The drink came out thick, pasty and tasting as if I just mixed a tablespoon of lifting chalk into a cup with my orange juice. I could not even taste the oranges so once again I disposed of the drink.

Unless you are accustomed to the taste of soy or have your own personal reasons for only using soy proteins you can give this product a try, but personally I could not take a single full serving. As for a ranking I cannot rightfully give it anything higher than a 5/10. I only give it this score after all the awful things I said about it because of the high protein content and other health benefits such as being low in saturated fats and cholesterol and "may reduce the risk of heart disease". Right away though I knew I was in for a letdown because it did not even come with a protein scoop just showing how little NOW actually cares about its products and convenience to customers.
