Background Information:

Scivation claims that its fenugreek extract (Testofen) increases androgen production for the adrenal cortex. They claim that Testofen stimulates the hypothalamus to produce coritcotropin releasing hormone (CRH), which then acts on the anterior pituitary gland causing it to produce adrenocorticotrophin hormone (ACTH). ACTH then acts on the adrenal cortex causing it to produce androgens, such as androstenedione, which can be converted to testosterone.

Scivation also claims that Testofen has its own testosterone-like properties and can directly activate the androgen receptor to produce testosterone-like effects.

Now, having done a little bit of my own personal research on fenugreek, I am unsure about Scivationís claim that Testofen increases endogenous androgen production. If one does a simple search on fenugreek they will find the shocking discovery that it has been used as a galactogogue and its purpose was to increase lactation in mothers. Now, before all you males out there get freaked out, the mechanism for this is thought to be due to the fact that fenugreek stimulates sweat production and increased lactation occurs because breasts are modified sweat glands. Fenugreek has also been used as an aphrodisiac and is supposedly a good source of diosgenin, which is used in the synthesis of steroid hormones. Although I could not find much in the way of scientific studies supporting Scivations claims, I did come across many articles showing another interesting effect of fenugreek. It would appear that fenugreek is often suggested as an alternative approach to the treatment of non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (Sauvaire et al., 1998). This is due to the fact that fenugreek supposedly has hypoglycemic activity, which is mediated through the insulin-signaling pathway (Vijayakumar et al 2005). This most likely occurs because fenugreek is a good source of the amino acid 4-Hydroxyisoleucine or 4-OH-Ile. This amino acid is also important for recovery after exercise. As an example, I came across a study that showed that when 4-OH-Ile, from fenugreek seeds, is added to a high oral dose of dextrose, rates of post-exercise glycogen resynthesis are enhanced above dextrose alone (B. C. Ruby et al., 2005).

Although I personally think Scivation's claims are a little sketchy, I do believe fenugreek has some kind of aphrodisiac properties. However, I am unsure if they are caused by an increase in endogenous (made by your body) hormone production or by some other mechanism. Also, there seems to be a large amount of people on bodybuilding forums stating that fenugreek is excellent for post cycle recovery and quickly brings back sex drive and size to the testicles. I personally like to read about other peopleís experiences with products because science is sometimes lacking in the amount of studies done and etc.

Also, it is important to note that the Fenotest and Anagen combo also contain a couple other herbs. Personally, I was mostly just interested in the fenugreek extract and thus have not really spent time researching the other ingredients. However, Scivation claims that Safed Musli is to increase libido and Rhodiola Rosea and Bacopa Monniera are adaptogen. They explain that adaptogens increase an organismís resistance to homeostatic disturbances. Also, Anagen contains Cyanotis Vaga (20-Hydroxyecdysterone) that Scivation claims to have many benefits. They say that it enhances skeletal muscle growth and enhances sexual health in men. Personally I donít really believe these claims, and as far as I know most studies done on ecdysterone are with animals. As a side note, I remember reading that ecdysterone is an ingredient in pesticides (plants produce the chemical to defend against insects).

Like many herbal supplements, I found it rather difficult to quantify the gains from the Fenotest/Anagen stack. Determining actual gains can be very difficult, but obviously one is not to expect the same gains with a supplement like this as with a hormonal product. What I did find is that this stack seemed to make my muscles more pumped and vascular. As far as strength gains go I did not really notice too much. However, it is important to note that during the time I was taking this I was not training as hard as usual and my diet was rather poor. At the same time, my strength did not really seem to go down even with the poor diet. Perhaps the stack did help a bit with strength. One thing that Scivation was right about was the effect on libido. I really did feel an increase in this area, and I believe it would be an excellent addition to a post cycle therapy after coming off a steroid cycle.

As far as side effects go, I did not experience anything. The capsules did not upset my stomach and I have a fairly sensitive stomach. Also, since the stack is in capsules, there are no issues with taste or mix-ability that one would experience if it were un-capped herbal powders. However, one interesting side effect, if you can call it a side effect, is the rather peculiar smell that fenugreek extract gives you. I found that my body odor and urine emitted a smell reminiscent of maple syrup. There are also studies documenting this strange effect from eating fenugreek. At the same time, this side should not really cause any problems, as long as you donít mind smelling like the pancake man. In conclusion, I say the product was decent for an herbal-based supplement and the price is right. However, if one is looking for big gains in weight or strength then I say look elsewhere.
